Bikini Kill is a radical feminist punk bank and I discovered them when I was in college. I remember coming into myself hanging out in the riot grrrl scene in NYC. I cut all my hair off and rejected the pretty in pink mold I think most women are fed. There isn't anything wrong with pink but it was really nice to reject all expectations of being a woman and empowering myself with that. I went to catholic school my whole life and wore a uniform so self expression was very hard for me because being an individual was not encouraged.
What I love most about the movie is how much it spoke to how music saves us sometimes. When I was in my early 20's I was really angry with men. I use to get cat called a lot and just straight up harassed and I wanted to revolt against that. Bikini Kill, riot grrls and feminism helped me to empower myself and reclaim my space. I appreciate the journey that I have been on in my life because it has shaped me.
This movie is so moving to me...I cried at the end. Check out the trailer of the documentary below and see if it is playing at a theatre near you. I highly recommend it.
